Participants will include: Representative Jim Ott of Wisconsin's State Assembly District 23, who will discuss the science of global warming and the environmental impact of the country's energy choices; Representative Phil Montgomery of Wisconsin's State Assembly District 4, whose district includes two nuclear power plants. He will discuss the politics of nuclear energy in Wisconsin; John Orth, a nuclear engineer who served on the State of Wisconsin's Nuclear Power Review Committee, who will discuss the issues surrounding nuclear waste disposal; Charlie Higley, executive director of the Citizens Utility Board; and Dr. Max Carbon, Professor Emeritus of the University of Wisconsin's College of Engineering and recent author of Nuclear Power: Villain or Victim? Our Misunderstood Source of Electricity.
Concordia President Patrick T. Ferry will introduce the panelists, and the forum will be moderated by Bruce Bessert, Director of Concordia's Center for Environmental Stewardship. The event, which is free to the public, will take place in the Friends of Concordia Room in the Sports and Fitness complex.
According to Dr. Jim Burkee, one of the event’s organizers, “The energy crisis in America is something that we should all be taking seriously and working together to resolve. This non-partisan symposium, which will be the first in a series addressing energy issues over the next year, is being presented to inform the important personal and political choices regarding energy Wisconsin residents make in the year to come.” Founded in 1881, Concordia University Wisconsin's main campus is located on approximately 200 acres on Lake Michigan at 12800 N.
